Dispute Over Amnesty Figures in Venezuela as Releases Continue
The recent report of Venezuela's National Assembly shows that over 3,200 people have been granted a full release since the new amnesty law went into effect on February 20, 2026. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez signed the law, which was unanimously approved after the abduction of Maduro by U.S. forces, with the aim of encouraging national reconciliation and reducing political tensions in the country. However, the new law has been subjected to a great deal of scrutiny, with the rights group Foro Penal confirming only 91 "political releases" so far, citing the fact that nearly 600 people are still in detention. Moreover, the law does not include those accused of terrorism or "promoting foreign intervention," which are common charges brought against political opponents in the country.
